Social Work is a growing profession with a 19 percent faster than average growth rate in the United States. Social workers help people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. One group of social workers, clinical social workers, also diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues.
The B.S.W. degree program is designed to prepare professionals for work in a wide variety of social service settings. The B.S.W. education emphasizes a “generalist perspective.” The generalist training offers preparation to graduates for working with issues at the individual, group, family, and societal levels. Our graduates are uniquely qualified upon graduation to provide services to diverse client populations in a wide range of settings. The program is a 54-credit-hour major and includes a two-semester internship in which students participate in current social work practice in a social service agency setting. Faculty have been actively involved in the designing of classes and are committed to students’ professional education. This is an exciting arena and we invite you to explore our major.
The MTSU M.S.W. program is dedicated to the enhancement of human well-being, diversity, and social justice through developing and improving systems of public social services by offering graduate training in social work. The purposes of graduate social work education are to prepare competent and effective professionals, to develop social work knowledge, and to provide leadership in the development of service delivery systems. We view social work education as being grounded in the profession’s history, purposes, and philosophy and based on a specific body of knowledge, values, and skills.
Both the B.S.W. and M.S.W. programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, Board of Accreditation; therefore graduates are eligible for state licensure as social workers. We invite you to learn more about social work and we will be happy to meet with you to answer your questions about this exciting profession.
